Who would have forgot 22nd March, 2012 when we had witnessed a prolific game of cricket between the Asian giants Pakistan and the emerging Bangladesh in the final of Asia Cup. Bangladesh was about to snatch the title of Asian champs for the first time but Aizaz Cheema came in their way and we had a last ball finish with Pakistan managing to win by only two runs. Even that last ball was full of controversy and Bangladeshi players protested that the bowler came in the way while the batsmen were running the second run. Well, the Asia Cup is back again and Pakistan are still the defending champions!
Technically speaking, Pakistan are simply the favorites to hold the title with them yet another time as they go into the tournament with a series win against Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s batting line seemed tuned up with the top order firing almost every time with the inclusion of Sharjeel Khan at the top. Hafeez has been in the form of his life time as he managed to score 448 runs in just 5 games at an average of 149.33. Similarly the lethal bowling attack has been further strengthened with the return of Umar Gul and some flexibility has been added by the youngsters Bilawal Bhatti and Anwar Ali to the squad.
Sri Lanka also have a good combination and are currently touring Bangladesh before they’ll go into the Asia Cup and this will certainly make them well acquainted with the conditions there in Bangladesh. Though, Sri Lanka lost the ODI series against Pakistan but still the series yielded them some promising young talent in the form of Kusal Parera and Ashan Priyanjan. Furthermore, they batted deep into the batting order which will prove to be a real strength for them as they move into the Asia Cup.
India, though ranked no.1 in ODIs, have been facing miserable times away from home as the side has been down and out since they left India and lost to South Africa first and then to New Zealand in the current ODI series. The batting line, on which India has always boasted off, has faltered badly every time with their top order collapsing all the time. Dhawan has scored at an average of only 16.8 while Sharma with an average of 29.66. Both these batsmen scored heavily back home, though. India will expect their batsmen to get back to form as they move back into the Asian conditions while they’ll expect the bowlers to show some flair too.
Afghanistan, though appearing for the first time in Asia Cup, seems to be a promising prospect. It’s going to be a good learning experience for them to have some games against the big teams in the world of cricket. They will also be looking to give tough time to the opponents and do at least something remarkable both with the bat and ball.
